Asparagus, a perennial plant, usually takes three growing seasons for a full harvest. Occasionally you may be able to lightly harvest during the second year.
In the first year all the plant to go vegetative. This will allow the crown to get well established.
The following spring, remove last years fern growth and watch for new spear emergence.
With proper maintenance, Asparagus can be harvested for decades.
