Annual: A plant which completes its life cycle in one growing season.
ASA (Attribute Stewardship Agreement): A stewardship agreement must be signed for the purchase of Attribute®, Attribute® Plus, and Attribute® II varieties.
BSTA: Bayer Technology Stewardship Agreement Performance Series™ sweet corn growers are required to have a current Bayer Technology Stewardship Agreement (license).
Determinate: A term used to define the developmental habit of bush-type tomatoes which grow to a certain size then divert their major energy away from vegetative structures, toward flower and fruit development and ripening.
FarMore® or FarMoreI400® Treated: An available treatment on some pumpkin, squash, and melon seed that provides broad-spectrum protection against soil-borne disease and/or early season protection against striped cucumber beetles.
Gynoecious: All (or virtually all) of the flowers produced are female.
Heirloom: An open-pollinated variety whose seed lines have been maintained and passed down by gardeners and farmers over generations, prized for traits such as appearance, fragrance, and flavor.
Hybrid (F1): The offspring of a cross between two genetically distinct parent lines. Hybrid varieties are selected for traits such as improved flavor, disease resistance, quality, yield, and climate adaptability. An F1 hybrid refers to the first filial or first generation offspring of the cross. Seeds saved from an F1 hybrid will not produce plants with characteristics equivalent to the F1 hybrid.
Monoecious: Produces male and female flowers on the same plant.
Open Pollinated (OP): A non-hybrid variety, one that can reproduce itself in kind, demonstrating relatively stable traits from one generation to the next when grown under OP varieties without other factor isolation from their parent lines.
Pelleted: Covered with a coating that improves shape, size, and uniformity of raw seeds for easier and more accurate sowing by hand and machine.
Indeterminate: A term used to describe the growth pattern of vining-type tomatoes that continue to form new leaves, shoots, and flowers for an indefinite time period (until frost or some other factor causes them to die).
Parent Line: To create quality parent seed that is genetically stable, uniform, and perfect, a parent seed line with the desired characteristics is inbred for several generations.
Parthenocarpic: In flowering plants, the female flowers are able to set fruit without pollination from male flowers.
Perennial: A plant that persists for more than 2 years.
Plant Variety Protected (PVP): PVP status indicates that the breeder has the legal "right to exclude others from selling the variety, or offering for sale, or reproducing it.
Resistance: Implies that a variety has a certain amount of resistance when exposed to a disease-causing pathogen.
Tolerance: Implies that a variety will perform relatively well when exposed to a particular environmental stressor.
Untreated or Raw: Seeds that have no chemical treatments.
Variety: A genetically similar population of plants, distinct in one or more traits from other populations.
Note: Performance may vary based on location, year, and conditions. Evaluate data from multiple sources.
